How To Improve Your Basketball Game

Practice, Practice, Practice! Yep, that?s all you need to do. If you?re trying to improve your game, you have to actually get out there and play. If you?re new to the sport, you?ve got a lot to learn, it?s true, but there?s no other way. You can read all the books you can get your hands on, you can watch the stars on televised games or on DVDs, but you can never get better unless you get out there on the court or on your driveway and shoot some hoops!

Where to begin? First, you need the right equipment. Luckily, for basketball, not much more is needed besides a ball, a hoop, and some sneakers. Do some light stretches and then get started. Start out with some dribbling. If you?re already good at this skill (you?d be surprised with how many folks have problems here!), incorporate it into moving around the court. Practice moving at different speeds and then work up to running with the ball and moving around obstacles (like other players). Take a shot and see how you do. Are you better and making the basket from one side or the other? From further away or up close? Now, while it feels good to always be successful from one spot, don?t forget to move around and practice from other areas of the court. When you?re playing a game (whether pick-up or in a league) you can?t count on always being able to get your spot to shoot from! (In fact, once your opponents realize what your strong points are, they?ll spend a lot of time and energy trying to keep you from using them!)

Get involved! You can do a lot of work on your game by yourself or with a friend or family member right in your own driveway or neighborhood park. But if you really want to improve, you?ve also got to play with others. Join a basketball league at your community center, local church or the YMCA. You?ll get to work with a coach who (likely) has more experience than you do, and will be able to help you improve your skills. The other players on your team are an invaluable resource, as well. If you just can?t seem to nail a three-point shot, someone else may be able to give you some tips based on how he or she improved on this skill themselves.

If joining a league is not for you due to time constraints, cash, etc? visit your neighborhood park. Chances are if there?s a basketball court on site, there?ll be people there, playing basketball! Ask to join in, and you?ll get some practice you may not have thought you?d get. Plus, you?ll be getting a great work-out and you?ll probably learn something from the other folks on the court. You might even make a few new friends, you never know!

So, if you want to improve your basketball game, it?s really very simple. Just get out there and play!

How Basketball Came To Be...
In early December 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a minister on the faculty of a college for YMCA professionals (today, Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied and at proper levels of fitness during the long New England winters. After rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto an 10-foot (3.05 m) elevated track. In contrast with modern basketball nets, this peach basket retained its bottom, so balls scored into the basket had to be poked out with a long dowel each time. A soccer ball was used to shoot goals.
